A Natural Remedy for Breast Tenderness

Breast tenderness is a common symptom in women at various times in their lives. The hormonal changes that accompany puberty, monthly menstruation, pregnancy and even menopause can cause temporary breast pain. Liver damage that is the result of alcoholism may also contribute to breast pain. Natural remedies that can be performed at home may help alleviate breast tenderness.

Step 1

Apply ice packs to your breasts when they become tender. Make sure you use a towel between the ice and your breasts to prevent damaging your skin. Ice several times a day or as needed, according to your pain level.

Step 2

Adjust your diet to relieve your breast pain naturally. The National Institutes of Health report that some women find relief by removing caffeine from their diets. Fatty foods may also aggravate breast tenderness; try restricting them when breast pain occurs.

Step 3

Ease breast tenderness with a daily dose of evening primrose oil (EPO), a natural supplement that contains essential fatty acids. Evening primrose oil is commonly used as a topical treatment for itching and as an oral supplement to relieve PMS symptoms. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests women take a daily dose of between 2 and 8 grams of EPO. The supplement is available in a capsule form at health food and natural living stores.
