How to Use Fentanyl Patches

The Fentanyl transdermal patch releases opiates, or narcotics, to treat chronic, long term pain. A person must require continuous around-the-clock pain relief to use the Fentanyl patch. The patch is not used for short term, or intermittent, pain. The patch works by binding pain receptors in the brain and nervous system.

Step 1

Clean and dry the skin where the patch will be applied. Shave any hair that is present with a razor. The patch is commonly placed on the upper arm or back.

Step 2

Remove the patch from the packaging and release the paper backing of the adhesive strip. Apply the patch to the skin. Press and hold the patch for 30 seconds to ensure proper adhesion. Press down firmly on the edges of the patch.

Step 3

Write the time and date the patch was applied to the skin with a waterproof marker directly on the patch. The patch can be worn up to 72 hours continuously. The patch can be worn when showering or bathing.

Step 4

Wash hands with soap and water after applying the patch.

Step 5

Remove the patch by picking up the edge, and quickly releasing the patch from the skin. Flush the patch down the toilet immediately.

Step 6

Examine the patch while wearing it. Observe for a gel substance leaking form the patch. Put on latex or rubber gloves if leaking is observed and remove the patch, and dispose of patch in the toilet. Wash off any gel substance with plenty of cool water. Avoid direct skin contact with the gel. Consult with a pharmacist to determine if and when new patch needs to be applied.
