Cellulite Stretching Exercise

Cellulite is a common condition in which fat deposits become less elastic over time, reports MayoClinic.com, which causes unsightly dimpling, though nothing medically threatening. There are many different causes of cellulite, ranging from stress to an inactive lifestyle to the use of hormonal contraceptives. Regardless of the initial cause, stretching exercises are a proven method for reducing the unsightly appearance of cellulite. As cellulite appears mainly on the thighs and rear end, stretching those areas is the most effective exercise.

Lunge

Step 1

Begin in a basic push-up position. Place your hands directly below your shoulders, fingertips pointing straight ahead. With your back straight, balance your weight on your hands and the balls of your toes. If you can't hold your weight up from this position, balance on your hands, toes and knees.

Step 2

Bring your right foot up so that it's next to and outside your right hand. If you started on your knees, straighten your left leg.

Step 3

Sink your weight, pressing your hips straight down without bending your left leg. Feel the stretch in your hamstring, rear end and inner thigh. Hold the stretch for a slow count of 30.

Step 4

Straighten your right leg and bring up your left leg to stretch on the other side.

Dynamic Toe Touch

Step 1

Begin standing straight, with your feet hip-distance apart and your back relaxed but straight.

Step 2

Bend at the waist until you are hanging freely from your hips, your head near your knees.

Step 3

Bend your knees until your palms touch flat on the ground.

Step 4

Keep your palms flat on the ground as you straighten your legs as much as you can. Feel the stretch move into your hamstrings. Hold the stretch for a slow count of 30.

Tips and Warnings

  • Yoga instructor Kerry Collette recommends breathing into stretches. If you exhale slowly as you enter a stretch, the relaxation from your exhale will allow you to move deeper into your stretch.
