Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder that causes skin cells to rapidly increase. Signs and symptoms include redness, flaky skin and irritation. Psoriasis is caused by white blood cells mistakenly attacking healthy skin cells as if the cells were a wound or an infection. Psoriasis is not an infectious or contagious disease. A variety of natural home remedies are available to treat the skin disorder.
Step 1
Soak in a tub that contains oatmeal, Epsom salts or bath oils. Do not use hot water; rather cool and lukewarm baths are recommended. Daily baths are suggested.
Step 2
Pat skin dry after bathing; do not rub, which will further irritate the psoriasis. Leave skin slightly damp and apply a heavy moisturizer. During dry months, reapplication of the lotion may be required during the day. Use a heavy over-the-counter cream that will lock in moisture, such as Eucerin.
Step 3
Treat excessive scaly patches of skin by applying the moisturizer to the affected area. Before going to bed, wrap the area of skin in plastic wrap. Remove plastic wrap in the morning along with any dead skin patches.
Step 4
Include fish oil capsules in your regular diet. Fish oil contains fatty acid EPA. Look for fish oil with high doses of EPA, as not all fish oils are the same.
Step 5
Apply a bag of ice to the skin or take a cool bath with 1 cup of apple cider vinegar. The cool feeling will relieve itching and irritation.
