Spencer County, Indiana, is particularly well known for the town of Santa Claus. Tourists and locals flock to visit an array of Christmas-themed attractions; however, keeping the younger population healthy is important. They need to get exercise and not just visit tourist attractions all day long. Luckily, Spencer County has a number of possibilities for them.

Golfing

Golf combines the benefits of exercise with the development of motor skills. For 18 holes of golf, a putting practice area or a driving range, visit the Christmas Lake Golf Course, which rests on and near hills, valleys and lakes.

Parks

Spencer County has lots of space to run around and play games of tag and hide-and-seek. Visit the hiking trail at Lincoln State Park, named for the boyhood home of former President Abraham Lincoln. Stay at the park overnight and go camping near the lake. At the Scales Lake Park Summer Day Camp, children engage in swimming, hiking, volleyball, kickball, softball, baseball and other healthy activities.

Dance Class

Taking dance lessons provides exercise, while also teaching important skills such as coordination, balance and dedication. Classes are offered in jazz, theater, tap, hip-hop, logging and lyrical for students 5 and older at the Dance Central Academy. Enroll your little ballerina in the Acros Ballet Academy at the Acros Gymnastics and Dance center. Introductory dance courses, combination classes and hip-hop classes are offered for boys and girls.

Gymnastics

Tumbling, somersaulting and handstands work out the body and train children in coordination and balance. Starting at 18 months old, children may enroll in gymnastics courses at Acros. Programs continue all the way up to the competitive level and are available for both girls and boys. Tumbling and trampoline classes are available as well. Other venues for gymnastics study include Hodgini School of Dance and Gymnastics and Gloria's School of Dance and Gymnastics.

Swimming

Head to the local pool or the Splashin' Safari Waterpark to cool down for the day and engage in some recreational swimming or water activities. However, opportunities are available for those who want to practice swimming at the competitive level as well. The Fisher Areas Swimming Tigers is ranked one of the top swimming teams in the Midwest. Lessons are sponsored by the Swimming Tigers for individuals who hope to join the team one day.
