Repeated shaving can cause the sensitive area on the neck to break out in a rash, and to become red, itchy and irritated. Rashes are often caused by a reaction to harsh shaving products, or by dry shaving or shaving too fast, according to Hudson's FTM Resource Guide. Proper skin care and a change in shaving habits will usually clear up the rash. See your physician or dermatologist if the rash continues or if your neck becomes inflamed and painful.

Step 1

Rinse your neck with warm water after shaving, then splash your neck with cool water to close your pores. Pat your skin dry with a towel, but don't rub.

Step 2

Apply a light alcohol-free moisturizer formulated for men. Select a moisturizer with a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to protect your skin from UV rays, advises Princeton University Health Services.

Step 3

Apply a thin layer of a mild, over-the-counter corticosteroid cream, which will soothe irritated skin and reduce inflammation, advises Columbia University. Massage the cream into the affected area until the cream is no longer visible. Allow at least 30 minutes after applying shaving cream or moisturizer. Use corticosteroid cream only on the affected area.

Step 4

Rinse your razor as you shave, and rinse the blade thoroughly after each use. Replace the blade at least once every week.

Things You'll Need

  • Towel
  • Alcohol-free moisturizer with sunscreen
  • Over-the-counter corticosteroid cream
  • New razor blades
