A grind in aggressive skating refers to a trick that involves the skater sliding on top of a metallic rail or on the edge of a smooth ledge. The aggressive skating model comes equipped with an indented section between the two middle wheels. This section, referred to as the grind plate, usually has a durable construction of a light metal or hard plastic. Aggressive skaters can perform a variety of different tricks by altering their foot position on the rail or ledge. Aggressive skaters should learn grinds on an obstacle with a low height to avoid injury.

Step 1

Push off of the pavement with the wheels on your aggressive skates while leaning forward to increase your momentum. Stop the pushing movement once your aggressive skates reach a medium speed. Roll in the direction of the obstacle you wish to grind.

Step 2

Bend your knees as you near the front of the rail or ledge. Extend your legs and jump towards the object. Lift your knees to raise your aggressive skates above the obstacle you wish to grind. Lower the indented area in the middle of your skates, known as the grind plate, onto the top of the rail or onto the edge of the ledge.

Step 3

Bend your knees to center your weight over the obstacle as the grind plates of your aggressive skates begin to slide. Spread out your arms to balance as you grind across the length of the metallic rail or smooth ledge. Extend your legs and jump away from the obstacle once you reach the end.

Step 4

Bend your knees as the wheels of your aggressive skates touch down onto the pavement to counteract the impact of your jump. Roll away from the obstacle to successfully complete your aggressive skating grind.
