Traveling with a baby adds to the complexity of packing due to all of the extra gear and items required. Making a list before you begin packing ensures you don't leave behind her favorite blanket or the portable crib. Packing the correct baby items should make your trip more enjoyable and easier, whether you're flying or driving.

Clothing

The baby clothing you pack depends largely on the destination and the length of time you will be away. BabyCenter recommends packing one or two outfits for each day of your vacation. Packing at least a few outfits will account for spills or leaking diapers that necessitate a clothing change. Consider the typical weather and temperatures in your destination, but pack at least one warmer and cooler outfit in case of varying temperatures. In addition to your baby's outfits, pack shoes, socks, hats, pajamas and swimsuits if necessary.

Feeding Supplies

The feeding supplies packed depend on your infant's age and his method of eating. For a young infant who exclusively breastfeeds, you won't likely need much. Older infants or those who are formula fed may need bottles, nipples, formula, filtered water, baby cereal, baby food, snacks, bowls, spoons, bibs, burp cloths and sippy cups. Customize your packing list based on your baby's eating habits.

Diapers and Personal Care

Diapers take up a lot of space in luggage, so you may want to purchase them when you arrive at your destination if a store will be nearby. Pack enough diapers to get you through the traveling portion of the trip and at least one day after arriving. This covers you if you can't find a store or are too tired to shop when you arrive.

Personal care items include all of the daily bathing and care items for your baby. The list may include baby soap, baby shampoo, inflatable baby bathtub, brush, sunblock, first aid kit and baby wipes. Go through your usual daily routine with your baby, adding items to the list as you use them.

Transporting Items

Baby gear to help transport your child means you won't have to carry her the entire time you're traveling. A stroller or sling works well for transporting your child through airports and at your final destination. A car seat is a must for your destination even if you fly.

Sleeping Accommodations

Hotels sometimes offer portable cribs, but they may be limited. Call the hotel to see if you can reserve a portable crib ahead of time, or pack your own portable crib. Whether you use the hotel's crib or your own, pack at least one fitted sheet specifically for a portable crib.

Entertainment and Comfort

The travel portion of the trip can get long and frustrating if your baby becomes upset or bored. Packing entertainment and comfort items may soothe your baby as you travel. Age-appropriate toys work well as a form of entertainment. Pack a variety of toys to keep your child busy. Include her favorite blanket, stuffed animal or other comfort items. This should make travel easier and may help her sleep better while you are away from home.
