Because of its location just a couple of miles outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the town of Sevierville, Tennessee, enjoys a robust tourism economy, particularly between Memorial and Labor Days. RV campers can take part in plenty of outdoor recreational activities in and around Sevierville, such as water sports, hiking and biking. RV camping offers visitors an affordable and flexible way to explore the Sevierville area.

Public RV Camping

Public RV camping is available at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park offers backcountry, or primitive campsites, as well as group campgrounds, horse campgrounds and, for RVers, frontcountry, or developed camping. Frontcountry campsites all have a picnic table and running cold water and restroom facilities, but there are no showers or electric hookups at the park. Some developed sites accept advance reservations in summer, but most operate on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Private RV Parks

Because of its proximity to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Sevierville has dozens of RV parks to choose from. At Pine Mountain RV Park, visitors can take advantage of amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi, cable hookup, swimming pool, snack bar and laundry facilities. At Foothills RV Park & Cabins, campers can enjoy a swimming pool, complimentary Wi-Fi and laundry facilities, and the park is just two miles outside of the Dollywood theme park and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. River Plantation RV Park has complimentary Wi-Fi, golf cart rentals, two pools, hot tubs, a playground and basketball courts.

Camping Considerations

The Smoky Mountains region fills up quickly between May 1 and October 1, particularly on holiday weekends, so you'll want to make your reservations far in advance. If you plan to participate in outdoor sports, wear appropriate hiking gear to reduce your chances of contracting Lyme Disease, poison oak and poison ivy. Also, keep in mind that even in summer, temperatures in Sevierville and the Great Smoky Mountains can get chilly at night, so pack blankets and warm pajamas.

Water Activities

Sevierville is near the Little Pigeon River, Douglas Lake and dozens of smaller lakes and creeks. RV campers can enjoy tubing or whitewater rafting on the Little Pigeon River, boating, jetskiing, waterskiing and swimming at Lake Douglas, and fishing for bass, crappie, walleye and catfish on nearly all the area's waterways.

Land Activities

Campers who prefer staying active on land will find that most area outdoor recreation is centered at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There, visitors will find 800 miles of maintained hiking trails as well as the 11-mile Cades Cove Loop Road, a paved biking trail ideal for families. Other area attractions include Dollywood, Forbidden Caves and the Biltmore Estate. Golfers can polish their game at Eagles Landing Golf Course or at the Tennessee Golf Course.
