How to Dress for Elliptical Training

Dressing appropriately for physical activity allows your body to move comfortably during your workout and improves exercise safety. Both shoes and clothing are important, and different styles work for different types of activity. The elliptical machine is a piece of cardiovascular equipment which moves your body in a motion similar to running and often incorporates arm movements. Choose the best outfit for your elliptical training by keeping a few details in mind.

Step 1

Wear athletic shoes that offer support and stability. Walking shoes, running shoes or cross-trainers are all acceptable for elliptical training.

Step 2

Choose socks made of a moisture-wicking fabric to absorb sweat. Select the thickness based on your preference. These types of socks can be found in varying thicknesses.

Step 3

Wear athletic shorts or Capri workout pants made of a moisture-wicking fabric to absorb sweat and keep you dry during your workout. Workout pants are an option also, but make sure they are not too long causing them to hang over your shoes. They should also allow your legs to move forward and back freely.

Step 4

Choose a medium to high impact support sports bra. The elliptical machine isn't a high impact activity like running or jumping, but when you are moving quickly on the machine you will need more support than you would for an exercise walk.

Step 5

Select a lightweight shirt with loose sleeves or a tank top. Most elliptical machines have movable handles to incorporate arm movement during the workout. You will want your arms to move freely. Also, choose a moisture-wicking fabric for your shirt as to keep you cool and dry.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you know you'll be trying a new activity at the gym throw an extra top and bottom in your workout bag so you have an extra option. There is nothing worse than your outfit making your exercise uncomfortable because it isn't a good fit for the movement. Athletic clothing made from moisture-wicking fabric can be found for any spending budget. The names are often associated with the specific company that produces them. Some examples include CoolMax®, CoolBalance®, Dri-Fit®, and ClimaCool®.
  • When using an exercise machine your clothing should let you move easily. However, it should not be too loose and flowing due to the risk of getting excess fabric caught in parts of the machine. Choose form-fitting clothing that is stretchable and breathable for the best results.
