Things to Do in Helen, Georgia

If you think all southern towns are alike, you are in for a nice surprise with Helen, Georgia--a destination that is like none other in the United States, though bears a resemblance to Bavaria, Germany. The town is styled with Alpine architectural details and cobblestone alley ways, and embraces German culture. Nestled in the Blue Ridge mountains of northeast Georgia, Helen also boasts a wealth of natural beauty and outdoor recreation.

Hit the Streets

True to its European style, there's no better way to take in the sights of Helen, Georgia, than on foot. Savor the charming scenery, and be sure to bring your camera! Originally a lumber town, town officials first came up with the idea to recreate a Bavarian village in 1968, with the help of an artist who had spent time in Germany. The gingerbread trim, cobblestone alleyways and murals of Alpine scenery quickly became hallmarks.

Do a Little Shopping

There are more than 200 specialty and import shops, according to Explore Georgia, Georgia's Official Tourism Website. Local merchants and artisans offer a unique selection of antiques, crafts and handmade gifts and souvenirs, including cuckoo clocks, hand-stitched quilts and hand-dipped candles. It's a veritable paradise for shoppers looking for one-of-a-kind treasures to take back home to family and friends--or to keep for themselves.

Get Out and Play

Whether you are into hiking, mountain biking or getting out on the water, there are plenty of opportunities to get out and explore the natural beauty of the region. A great place to start is Unicoi State Park, which offers trails for a variety of skill levels, fishing and boating, camping and picnicking, plus access to the scenic Anna Ruby Falls. Tubing along the Chattahoochee River is another leisure activity.

Tantalize Your Taste Buds

Once you've worked up a hearty appetite, reward your taste buds with some authentic German, Southern or eclectic cuisine at one of Helen's many restaurants or cafes, including Helen's own Hofbrauhaus--a must for beer-lovers. Don't forget to stop in for a tasting at the award-winning Habersham Winery, one of the oldest and largest in all of Georgia, as well.

Take in a Festival

Considering the Bavarian theme, it should come as no surprise that Oktoberfest is a big deal in Helen, Georgia. In fact, the festival spans two months--both September and October. Get your fill of sauerkraut, chicken dancing and, of course, German beers. But be sure to book your accommodations early, as the city of Helen fills up fast this time of year.

While Oktoberfest is certainly a big deal, it's not the only event worth noting. There's also an annual balloon race, holiday festivities and Bavarian Summer Nights, among others.
