Deciding on a career path can be a daunting task for many people. Anxiety is common when contemplating which direction to go professionally. According to the Employment Spot website, most Americans will change careers at least three times during their lives. Finding a career that is fulfilling is difficult. Following some specific steps will point you in the right direction to make the best choice for yourself.

Step 1

Speak to a career counselor or take a career assessment test to help narrow down job choices that match your skills, passions, education and beliefs. Your school will have resources you can utilize. If you no longer attend school, contact municipal and state offices and inquire about where to find the help you need.

Step 2

Research different careers that fall within your areas of interest. Look into salaries, qualifications and growth potential. Talk to people already working in the careers you are interested in, and ask about their daily duties, work environments, stress levels and job satisfaction.

Step 3

Write down a list of priorities to consider when selecting a career. You will have to determine if following your passion is the most important thing, if salary is at the top of the list, or if it is potential for advancement that motivates you the most. Think honestly about it, then seek out careers that fall in line with your priority list.

Step 4

Pursue job opportunities in your field without hesitation once you have made a decision. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, as your initial choice is not written in stone.

Tips and Warnings

  • Be patient as you weigh your options and make a decision. The answer may not come right away.
