The Texas Hill Country is one of the most scenic stretches of land you'll find in the Lone Star State. Aside from its majestic views of wildflowers and blue skies over green hills, lakes abound in the area. The best part of the lake chain in this area, known as the Highland Lakes, is the country charm you'll soak in while there.
Highland Lakes
The Highland Lakes chain consists of Lake Buchanan, Inks, Lake LBJ, Lake Marble Falls, Lake Travis and Lake Austin. Lake Travis and Lake Austin are separate and border Austin, while the other four lakes are connected about an hour northwest of the city. The lakes--some of Texas' best sources of fishing, boating and water sports--draw tourists from all over Texas and the United States.
Lake Buchanan
The second largest lake out of the cluster, the first thing you may notice is the lighthouse at Buchanan Dam. From resorts to TVs and tent grounds, there are accommodations for all types of travelers. For the real lake experience, renting a houseboat can be a treasured experience. All manner of restaurants are in this area, including regional fare such as Southern comfort food and Tex-Mex--and don't forget the barbecue.
Inks Lake
If you follow the Colorado River downward, you'll run into Inks Lake, the shortest and arguably most scenic of the Highland Lakes. Check out the view of the bridge and the dam, and soak in some boating, water skiing and fishing. Common fish in the lake include catfish, crappie and bass. For hiking and wildlife viewing, Inks lake State Park is the place to be. For golfers, a nine-hole course is located a few miles away.
Lake Lyndon B. Johnson and Lake Marble Falls
From the town of Kingsville to Horseshoe Bay, Texas, Lake LBJ is prime sailing territory, and it's one of the most trafficked lakes. Water skiing and jet skiing also are popular Lake LBJ activities. A popular retirement and summer vacation spot, families often rent homes for family reunions. Boating and skiing are popular on the considerably large Lake Marble Falls. Drag boat racing and golf also are common, and shopping is just a stone's throw away.
Lake Travis and Lake Austin
The longest lake of the chain attracts boating of all kinds. Golfing, shopping and entertainment abound in the area. Many a sunsets have back-dropped placid sailboats, and the Texas Hill Country scenery is in ample supply. Cliffs of suburban homes overlook Lake Austin, another popular gathering spot for lakeside enthusiasts.
