Although successful weight loss hinges upon consuming fewer calories than you expend on a daily basis, many diet plans insist that the elimination of certain food groups is the key. The Pritikin Diet, for example, suggests drastically reducing fat and protein intake, explains the health information website Diets In Review.com.

The Pritikin Diet involves high intake of carbohydrates and fiber, which may help you feel full and thus reduce food intake. Diets In Review.com explains this diet may decrease your risk of common diseases as well. Consult your doctor before beginning the Pritikin Diet or any weight loss plan.

Whole Grains

According to the weight loss information website Diet.com, whole grains are vital to the Pritikin Diet. This is because many whole grain sources, such as whole grain pasta, oats and brown rice are high in carbohydrates and fiber and low in fat and protein. Diet.com explains that you may still eat refined grain products in limited quantities, but that replacing all refined grain products with whole grain products is preferable for the Pritikin Diet protocol.

Vegetables

Online weight loss resource The Diet Channel explains that the Pritikin Diet also recommends intake of numerous low-calorie foods, including vegetables. Vegetables are naturally very low in fat, but provide vitamins and minerals as well as dietary fiber, though the amounts vary by vegetable type. With the exception of soybeans and beans, most vegetables are also relatively low in protein.

Fish

Diet.com explains that one of the few protein sources permitted on the Pritikin Diet is fish, including shellfish. However, the website notes that servings of fish are to weigh no more than 3.5 oz cooked. Fish is acceptable for the Pritikin Diet protocol because fish is low in fat and low in calories, though high in protein and low in carbohydrates.

Fruit

Another low-calorie Pritkin-approved food suggested by The Diet Channel is fruit. Like vegetables, fruits offer vitamins, minerals and fiber. In addition, fruits are low in fat and protein.

Nonfat Dairy Products

Although dairy products contain protein, Diet.com explains that nonfat dairy products including yogurt and milk are acceptable on the Pritikin Diet. Diet.com notes that these foods are included because they are high in calcium, and that soymilk may be substituted. Calcium may help you retain strong bones.

Nuts and Seeds

Although nuts and seeds are high in fat, health and nutrition website That's Fit notes that the Pritikin Diet allows you to eat one quarter-cup of nuts and seeds each day. The nuts and seeds considered acceptable include peanuts, almonds, cashews and pecans.
