How to Easily Put in a Contact Lens

Many people are able to make the transition to contact lenses without much difficulty. Applying contact lenses isn't difficult but may require practice. Some people develop their own techniques to accommodate specific circumstances or physical difficulties. These steps should work for most contact lens wearers and will become easier with practice.

Step 1

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, and towel-dry them. This removes dirt from your hands before using them and touching the contact.

Step 2

Remove a contact from the case with your right index finger and apply a drop of solution to the lens. Some soft lenses are marked with a dot, a letter or numbers to help discern which direction they should face. If the lens is attached to the eye in a backwards position, it will be uncomfortable and may not attach to the eye properly. Applying solution to the lens helps lubricate the lens and helps with transferring the lens from your finger into your eye.

Step 3

Pull gently on the lower part of your eye with the other hand. Some find that using the side of the left index finger to hold the lower part of the eye open provides support for inserting the contact.

Step 4

Place the contact lens on your eye, using gentle pressure from the right index finger. Do not blink or close your eyes for a moment while the lens settles onto your eye.

Step 5

Lift your head and blink a couple of times after inserting the lens. This will help position the lens properly and confirm that it is properly applied.
