With its mild climate and easy lifestyle, San Diego, California is ideal for senior citizens. There are many beaches, parks and neighborhoods where you can either relax or take part in a healthy activity. In addition, there are senior programs designed to enhance social interaction, education and fitness. If you're a senior, you'll find no shortage of enjoyable things to do in San Diego.

San Diego Senior Games Association

Maintain your fitness level by participating in the San Diego Senior Games Association. This dynamic club, designed for people aged 50 and over, encourages healthy competition, exercise and social interaction. Sponsored events include ballroom dancing classes, men's and women's soccer, tennis and track and field. Each September, you can even take part in a senior's Olympics. In addition to sports, there are educational classes and socials.

Senior Center

The San Diego Parks and Recreation Department maintains several senior centers throughout the city. Activities include dances, trips to Las Vegas and Palm Springs and social events. They also sponsor a yearly senior art show. In addition, the Senior Lounge in Balboa Park is open to seniors to relax and socialize. Check the events calendar for listings.

Senior Wii Bowling

Warm up those arm and shoulder muscles and get ready for virtual bowling. The National Senior Bowling League sponsors Wii bowling programs throughout the country. Many retirement centers in San Diego such as St. Paul's Manor have affiliate clubs. Contact the league for more information about local opportunities.

Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol

Seniors above the age of 50 interested in donating time to the community can do volunteer work alongside law enforcement. The Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol invites seniors to perform vacation house checks, community surveillance and other forms of additional police support. If you're interested, you must commit to several eight-hour shifts a month and have a valid driver's license.

Day Trips and Excursions

Grab a hat, lace up those shoes and explore San Diego and other parts of Southern California. Many self-guided walking tours are available of San Diego harbor, the Gaslamp district and Balboa Park. If you're interested in a guided tour, Southern California Day Trips offers an array of senior-friendly excursions. Popular trips include Mission San Juan Capistrano and the Japanese Friendship Garden. There are also tours designed for seniors on Amtrak and by bus.
