Stress can have some unpleasant emotional implications ranging from imagined danger to an increased heart rate, sweating and a change in respiration. When stress leads to anxiety that alters one’s ability to participate in daily life, medications or supplements may be used to improve your quality of life.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors—also called SSRIs—are a category of antidepressant that addresses abnormal activity of the neurotransmitter serotonin. When taken in a prescribed dosage, SSRIs leave more serotonin in the brain, improving mood and inducing a state of well-being. SSRIs also are commonly used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder and acute stress disorders. Brand names include Celexa, Lexapro, Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil.

Sedative Medications

Central nervous system depressants such as Xanax, Valium, Klonopin and Ativan are types of benzodiazepines that induce a state of relaxation, sleepiness and slowed respiration, and may be prescribed to relieve tension and stress.

Antihistamines

Antihistamines such as Atarax, Vistaril, Placidyl and Noludar may be prescribed in cases of stress for their sedative effects.

BuSpar

Because it’s thought to impact some of the brain’s chemical messengers, such as serotonin and dopamine, BuSpar, a nonaddictive anti-anxiety medication, may be prescribed short-term to relieve symptoms of stress.

Beta Blockers

Although they are used to treat high blood pressure, beta blockers (propranol, atenolol) also can play a role in decreasing symptoms of stress by inhibiting neurotransmitter action and the hormone norepinepherine in the heart muscle, which leads to a decreased force of contraction in the heart.

Herbal Options

Natural supplements may be helpful in reducing stress. Some popular choices include Kava, valerian, 5-HTP and passion flower. Herbs such as chamomile, hops and skullcap also have been used to treat stress.
