The mineral zinc is so important for healthy skin that zinc deficiency in the diet can cause skin problems like dermatitis and acne, according to the University of Maryland. Skin care with topical zinc ointment may also help protect the skin and treat a number of skin conditions. If your skin condition doesn't improve within seven days, consult a health care provider.

Skin Irritation

Zinc ointment can soothe minor skin irritations like dermatitis, sunburn, chafing and dry skin. It's also an option for treating contact dermatitis from plants like poison ivy and sumac. Apply as directed on the packaging. Application usually requires covering the entire area of irritated skin with a thin layer of ointment and gently massaging in the ointment. Never apply zinc ointment to broken skin or severe burns.

Diaper Rash

Zinc ointment is an especially effective treatment for diaper rash, note experts from Penn State University. Several brands of diaper rash cream contain zinc, but you can also use pure zinc ointment to speed the healing of these rashes. Apply ointment whenever you change your baby's diaper. Apply only after cleaning and drying the baby's skin. For prevention of diaper rash, the University of Maryland recommends applying zinc oxide before bed or times when diaper changes may be delayed for whatever reason.

Natural Sunblock

Zinc deflects the sun's UVA and UVB rays, protecting you from sunburns. Because of this, zinc ointment makes a good natural alternative to chemical sunscreen for those with sensitive skin. Apply a liberal amount of zinc ointment to any area that will be exposed to sun, such as your arms and face. Keep the ointment away from your eyes and avoid getting any in your nose or mouth.

Cold Sores

Flare ups of the herpes simplex virus 1 cause sores on and around the lips known as cold sores or fever blisters. While zinc ointment may not prevent these sores, it may help affected skin heal more quickly. Applying zinc ointment as soon as the cold sore starts shorten the sore's duration and lessens symptoms, found a study published in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine in 2001. For open sores, wait until a crust forms, then apply a dab of zinc ointment several times a day. Avoid getting the ointment in your mouth and don't apply zinc ointment to an open cold sore.
