A speed bag is an effective tool for boxers to increase rhythm, timing and eye-hand coordination. But you don't have to be a boxer to get these benefits. Anyone can learn how to hit a speed bag. Once your speed bag is mounted you can get helpful tips from the Internet or a boxing trainer.

Mounting a Speed Bag

Step 1

Place your platform in an area clear of other objects—such as an open area of a garage or in a backyard patio. All hardware should be supplied within the box. Assemble platform, angle iron brackets into an L-shape and use carriage bolts supplied with your platform to attach to the frame brackets. If you are mounting the platform in your garage and it has sheet rock walls, use a stud finder to locate the studs. The height of your platform should be roughly one foot taller than your height. Mark the wall at one foot above your height and mark the distance between wall studs.

Step 2

Once the platform is assembled you will attach 2 x 4 x 3 mounting studs horizontally to the marked wall beginning with your height plus one foot. The mounting holes of the speed bag frame brackets will determine the distance vertical boards will be placed from one another. Center the mounting boards with the measurements of the rear speed bag mounting frame. Drill into the wall and mount with ¼ x 3-½ inch wood lag screws. Assemble using level on wood horizontally to ensure that one side is not lower than the other. Drill the holes through the mounting studs and wall studs to ensure wood does not splinter.

Step 3

Once the mounting studs are mounted horizontally onto the wall, attach the speed bag frame brackets. Re-check all screws in the speed bag frame or mounting pieces. Attach swivel, air up speed bag until a comfortable indent of 1/8-inch can be seen when squeezing. You can place a five pound weight on top of the platform to ease some of the vibration.

Tips and Warnings

  • Make sure swivel spins in a circle freely. Tape down weight on platform so it does not move from the vibration.
  • Use the help of a friend when putting up speed bag platform.
