Fatigue is an extreme feeling of exhaustion that interferes with daily functioning and is often accompanied by lack of motivation or desire to anything but sleep. Iron-deficiency Anemia
Iron-deficiency anemia is a condition characterized by an inadequate number of healthy red blood cells due to a lack of iron. Red blood cells contain an iron-rich protein component called hemoglobin. Without iron, hemoglobin cannot be made, thus red blood cells cannot properly form. Since red blood cells carry oxygen, without an adequate number of red blood cells, tissues do not get enough oxygen. A lack of iron can be due to blood loss, inability of the body to properly absorb iron or insufficient iron intake. Symptoms of iron-deficiency anemia include fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, headache, pale skin, brittle nails, sore tongue and cracks in the sides of the mouth, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Iron-deficiency anemia can usually be successfully treated with increased iron intake or the use of iron supplements. In cases of iron-deficiency anemia caused by severe loss, blood transfusions may be needed.
Hashimoto's Disease
Hashimoto's disease, an autoimmune disease, is the most common form of hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid gland. Hashimoto's disease is characterized by the chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is responsible for producing and releasing thyroid hormones that aid in proper metabolism and other body processes. When the thyroid gland is inflamed, it cannot make adequate amounts of thyroid hormones. This causes fatigue, weight gain, intolerance to cold, muscle pain, joint pain, constipation, thinning hair and a slowed heartbeat. Hashimoto's disease cannot be cured, but symptoms can be treated by taking synthetic thyroid hormones, usually for a lifetime.
Major Depression
Major depression is a chronic illness characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and unhappiness. The exact cause of depression is unknown, but it is believed to develop as a result of a combination of factors, including genetics, hormone imbalance, chemical imbalance, early childhood trauma and significant tragic life events. Depression can cause mental and physical symptoms. In addition to sadness, other symptoms include fatigue, irritability, frustration, loss of interest, reduced sex drive, change in sleeping habits, changes in appetite, trouble concentrating and headaches. Treatment for depression consists of a combination of antidepressant medications and psychotherapy.
