Ear infections are the number one reason for doctor's visits each year, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. In many cases, the infections are resolved on their own. The AAP does not have an official statement on natural, alternative treatments for ear infections, though many such treatments are available. Parents seeking a natural antibiotic for their child's ear infection should select a pediatrician who is supportive of alternative treatments and together come up with the best course of action for their child.

Ear Infections Defined

The most common symptoms of ear infection, also called otitis media, include ear pain, fever, malaise, irritability and discharge. Ear infections are commonly secondary infections preceded by unresolved sinus or respiratory issues. The immaturely shaped Eustachian tubes and weaker immune systems of children make them more susceptible to these infections than adults.

AAP Statement

While American doctors have long turned to antibiotics as a first treatment for ear infections, European doctors resort to antibiotics only if the infection does not clear on its own. In 2004, the AAP changed its policy in favor of a period of "watchful waiting." In other words, doctors may treat the pain of an ear infection with analgesics and eardrops and only prescribe antibiotics if the infection is still present two to three days after the initial diagnosis. Children under the age of 6 months, however, should be treated with antibiotics immediately. The AAP does not have an official statement on alternative treatments for ear infections.

Garlic Mullein Drops

Garlic mullein drops possess antiviral and antibacterial properties, making them an ideal natural antibiotic for ear infections. Renowned pediatrician Dr. William Sears recommends them to his patients with severe pain. The drops may be purchased over the counter or made at home. Mothering magazine recommends infusing a neutral carrier oil such as olive or sweet almond with mullein. This may take up to two weeks. Then crush a clove of garlic into a few tablespoons of warm oil. Combine the two oils, strain them and apply them directly to the ear canal.

Research

Research supports the efficacy of garlic mullein as a natural antibiotic for ear infections. "Pediatrics," the official journal of the AAP, published a May 2003 study that found garlic mullein drops were just as effective as antibiotics at treating ear infection in children.

Warning

A natural treatment for ear infections may be desirable for parents who seek to avoid the harsh side effects of prescription antibiotics. It is important, however, when pursuing alternative treatment to maintain close contact with a pediatrician so symptoms may be closely monitored. Ear infections that do not improve can sometimes become serious.
