Difference Between Psoriasis & Dandruff

Dandruff and psoriasis are both diseases that affect the skin. According to MayoClinic.com, it may be difficult to differentiate between dandruff and psoriasis when they both affect the scalp.

Effects

Dandruff is a skin disease that affects only the scalp with symptoms that include itching and dots of white flakes on the scalp.

Psoriasis can affect any part of the body including the scalp. But, it is commonly seen on the elbow and knee, as stated by American Academy of Family Physicians. Symptoms of psoriasis are raised patches of skin with red bases and scaly tops. Itching and burning skin are also symptoms of this condition.

Causes

Psoriasis occurs when the body's immune system attacks and destroys skin cells. The skin responds by overproducing new cells and this leads to symptoms of psoriasis.

Dandruff is caused by dry skin on the head, not shampooing the scalp regularly, an oily scalp and allergic reactions to hair care products.

Treatment

MayoClinic.com suggests that dandruff can be treated with over-the-counter and gentle shampoos.

Treatment for psoriasis includes keeping the skin moisturized, light therapy, applying topical corticosteroids and using special shampoos for psoriasis of the scalp.
