Farsightedness, also called hypermetropia, occurs when the eye loses its ability to correctly focus on nearby objects. If farsightedness goes untreated, you may begin to suffer from severe headaches and eye strain. Laser eye surgery and prescription eyeglasses are the most common farsightedness remedies, according to Harvard Medical School. Aside from these traditional remedies, there are also a variety of eye exercises that may reduce farsightedness and make your vision better.
Blinking and Relaxing
The purpose of eye exercises if to train the eyes to focus properly by helping them relax, according to PRLog. One example includes leaving your eyes open while you cover them with both of your hands. Make sure your hands are tight over your eyes so that they are in complete darkness. You can leave your hands in place anywhere from 1 to 30 minutes. The darkness helps to relieve strain from your eyes. Another way to help the eyes relax is to blink more throughout the day. Blinking keeps the eyes from being tired and dry by lubricating them. To lubricate the eyes, blink 25 times as fast as you can at least once daily. If you prefer to go slower, close your eyes for 4 seconds and then hold them open for 4 seconds.
Focal Flexibility
Focal flexibility exercises are used to help the eye muscles learn how to easily transition from near vision to far vision, according to Eye Exercises for Good Vision. To perform the exercise, select a focal point that is about 20 feet away from you and sit in a spot where you have a clear view of the point you chose. The chosen focal point can be a window, car, picture or anything else that is the correct distance away. Hold your index finger up about 6 inches in front of your face, and focus on the finger. Change your focus to the object that you selected. This causes the eyes to quickly refocus to a different depth and distance. This exercise can be performed at least twice daily. Each time you perform the exercise, go back and forth between the focal point and your finger 20 to 30 times. Once you have performing this exercise for several weeks, the repetitions can be increased to 40 to 50.
Stretching
Stretching exercises will not only help strengthen your eyes, but may also help make the other eye exercises you perform more effective. To stretch your eyes, simply tightly squeeze your eyes together for about 3 seconds and then open them. This exercise helps to bring nutrients to your eyes and also aids in circulation. Another stretching exercise consists of looking as far to the right and to the left as you can. Next, look as far up and then as far down as you can. Repeat these exercises three times. To get the best results from your stretching exercises, spend at least 5 minutes a day performing them.
