What Are the Dangers of Taking Flomax With Zantac 150?

The National Institutes of Health state that Flomax, otherwise known as tamsulosin, belongs to a class of medications known as alpha blockers. Flomax is used to prevent symptoms of enlarged prostate in patients with benign hyperplastic hyperplasia and works by relaxing the muscles of the prostate and bladder so that urine can easily flow. Zantac, a stomach-acid reducer, is prescribed to patients taking Flomax in order to prevent stomach irritation.

Decreased Therapeutic Effects of Flomax

According to Drugs.com, administration of Flomax together with Zantac affects the absorption of Flomax which leads to lack of improvement of symptoms of enlarged prostate. Zantac reduces production of stomach acid and may decrease absorption of Flomax if the two drugs are taken together.

Gastrointestinal Upset

According to Drugs.com, Flomax use may cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, stomach irritation, esophagitis and stomach bleeding. Zantac in a dosage of 150 mg may be used to decrease the irritation of stomach irritation from Flomax. However, Zantac should be taken one to two hours before Flomax.

Hypersensitivity

According to Drugs.com, some patients may have allergic reactions after taking Flomax and Zantac. Common signs and symptoms of allergic reactions include rash, hives, itching, problems breathing, swelling of the face and tongue, chest tightness, irregular heart beat, fever and chills.
