Alternative Gout Treatment

Gout is a type of arthritis that can strike very suddenly. Gout occurs when uric acid, found in the urine, hardens into crystals and surrounds the joints. Gout can affect any joint, but usually causes problems in the smaller joints such as in the toes and hands. The condition is characterized by pain, swelling, redness and a warmth in the affected areas. Medications can control gout and reduce the inflammation, but sometimes a more natural remedy is desired. Alternative gout treatment can include dietary changes and relaxation techniques.

Water

When a person is dehydrated, uric acid in both the bloodstream and the urine becomes more concentrated. Higher concentrations of uric acid can lead to gout. A natural, non-medicated treatment for gout is simply staying hydrated. Drinking water dilutes the amount of uric acid in the body and flushes it out through the body's natural processes of excretion.

Cherries

Cherries, cherry juice and other fruits with dark skins may be an alternative treatment for gout, according to both PeaceHealth, a nonprofit health care organization, and the Mayo Clinic. The Mayo Clinic explains that the reasons for the link are unknown, but that cherries, blueberries and raspberries may be able to lower higher-than-normal levels of uric acid. PeaceHealth suggests eating 1/2 lb. of cherries or drinking an equivalent amount of juice daily to reap the benefits.

Coffee

The Mayo Clinic reports a correlation between drinking coffee and the body's levels of uric acid. People who drink coffee on a daily basis may have lower levels of uric acid, which can help alleviate and prevent gout attacks. The medical team at Mayo states that there seems to be no differentiation between those who drank regular coffee or decaf.

Vitamin C

Taking at least 4 g daily of a vitamin C supplement may be an alternative remedy for gout, according to PeaceHealth. Their studies revealed that gout sufferers eliminated more uric acid through their urine than those who did not use vitamin supplements. Increasing the amount of vitamin C--or any other supplement--in the diet should be discussed with a doctor to be sure the regimen is safe.

Deep Breathing

Deep breathing, meditation and yoga may all be helpful in treating gout without medications. Though these techniques will not reduce the inflammation in the joints or lower uric acid levels, a calm body and mind may not be affected by pain as acutely as one that is not relaxed.
