How to Use Salicylic Acid 10 Percent Peel

Salicylic acid is a natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent that is available in a variety of formulations. The treatment can be obtained over the counter, at your doctor's office or from a trained professional at a salon or spa. Salicylic acid helps to treat skin disorders such as dandruff, psoriasis, skin discoloration and acne. In addition, it can help to diminish or eliminate thin lesions on the skin's surface, reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin texture, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Consult with your health care provider to discuss any potential risks of using a 10 percent salicylic acid peel at home.

Step 1

Read the manufacturer's label in reference to instructions, warnings and tips. Ensure that you understand the application directions, preparations and time recommendations. Increased absorption of salicylic acid might cause skin damage or salicylic acid poisoning.

Step 2

Wash the area where you will be applying the 10 percent salicylic acid peel with mild soap and water. This will remove the oil and dirt from the skin and prepare the skin for the treatment.

Step 3

Apply the 10 percent salicylic acid peel to the targeted skin area. If you are treating your face, avoid the eyes, nose and mouth areas. Flush with water for at least 15 seconds if the salicylic acid enters these areas.

Step 4

Wash your hands with mild soap and water after application. Dry with a towel.

Step 5

Set a timer or monitor the time. Follow the manufacturer's recommended time for leaving the salicylic acid on your skin.

Step 6

Rinse your skin with warm water and gently wipe it down with a warm, wet washcloth. Splash with cold water and pat your skin dry with a towel.

Step 7

Apply a moisturizer. Chemical peels might increase your skin's dryness, and applying a lotion or cream will help rehydrate the skin.

Tips and Warnings

  • Perform a patch test on a small area of your skin with the salicylic acid to see how your skin will react to the peel. If you experience irritation, do not proceed with the peel. Chemical peels may cause your skin to be photosensitive. Use a sunscreen for protection after a chemical peel treatment.
  • After the treatment, redness and inflammation may occur for up to 48 hours. If the condition worsens, seek medical treatment. Salicylic acid can be absorbed through your skin; therefore, it is not safe to use a peel if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
