A mountain bike ramp makes for a useful training tool, whether you're training for route running or just playing around to get air. According to information posted by the International Mountain Bicycling Association, building your own jump ramp requires no special equipment or skill. It only takes the desire to build one and the patience to build it right.
Step 1
Pick your location. There should be enough room for a good approach and space to jump and land. You should also choose an area free of landing hazards on all sides, such as large rocks, sharp-spined plants or debris.
Step 2
Confirm that you may build on your desired location. If it's someone else's private property or public land, get permission. If it's on your own land, check with your area's zoning department.
Step 3
Outline the base of your ramp using the blade of your shovel or the blade of your hoe.
Step 4
Stack medium rocks three to four inches deep to form the foundation of your ramp. This makes for a more solid ramp and allows for drainage.
Step 5
Shovel dirt on to your foundation, filling in cracks and spaces between the rocks as much as possible. Cover the rocks completely, then tamp down the dirt with the flat of your hoe.
Step 6
Cover your foundation with dirt until the pile is 3 inches higher than the height you want for your ramp.
Step 7
Water the ramp until it is slightly damp, then tamp it down with the flat of your hoe. Wait for it to dry.
Step 8
Smooth and shape the dried ramp using your shovel, hoe and hands until it is sculpted to your needs. Pay special attention to the entry point of your ramp, which should smoothly meet the approach road for best results.
Tips and Warnings
- If you plan to share your ramp, check your current liability insurance policy or consider getting some. Mountain biking can be risky and you don't want to pick up the tab for a guest's injuries.
