According to Kids Health, ear infections are a common problem in children. A passage called a eustachian is located between your throat and middle ear. The tube helps to keep air in and out of your ears. However, the tubes in children are small and germs can enter. Luckily, there is a number of home remedies available for children to help treat ear infections. None of these claims have any scientific evidence to back them up.
Valsalva's Maneuver
According to the New York Times Health section, a simple technique called the Valsalva's Maneuver is helpful when it comes to ear infections in children as it will help to open the eustachian tubes and provide somewhat relief from the pain. Children are instructed to take a deep breathe, close the mouth and blow out of the nose gently at the same time. It's important that the child does not blow too hard or the eardrum can be damaged.
Pain Relievers
Many over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribed medication are available to help treat ear infections in children. Children can take medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. For pain that is severe, older children should take pain relievers that contain codein, which reduces the severity of pain and aches. Eardrops are also another popular choice like Auralgan. Auralgan helps to provide quick relief.
Warm Products
Parents can apply a warm product such as a warm water bottle or bag of salt to the affected area. Placing the warm product for a few minutes can help to reduce the pain in the ear. Many people consider using ear candles to help relief the pain of ear infections but they are not a safe or effective treatment for ear conditions and children have a high risk of obtaining a burn.
