Street riding remains a popular genre of freestyle BMX as it does not require the rider to pay a fee to gain entrance into a BMX park. Instead of using professionally built ramps inside the parks, BMX riders take to the streets and search for man-made rideable obstacles including handicap ramps and grass gaps. Though it remains commonplace for BMX street riders to not use protective gear, novice riders should wear at least a helmet when attempting any street BMX tricks.

Step 1

Place your hands onto the opposing grips of the street BMX located on the handlebars. Raise your left foot onto the corresponding bike pedal. Push your right foot off the ground while leaning forward to roll the street BMX. Lift your leg over the seat of the bike and place your right foot onto the corresponding pedal.

Step 2

Press the bike pedals forward with the bottoms of your feet to accelerate your BMX bike. Extend your legs to stand over the seat of the BMX after you have reached an optimal speed. Bend your legs as your BMX approaches the top of the grass gap or set of stairs. Pull the grips of the handlebars up and jump into the air.

Step 3

Lean forward as your bike leaves the top of the gap or set of stairs and rises off the ground. Pull up or push down on the handlebars to ensure the BMX stays parallel with the ground as you continue to float down the gap or set of stairs. Bend your legs and elbows as you land at the bottom of the grass gap or set of stairs.

Step 4

Push the BMX pedals forward with the bottoms of your feet to attain an adequate speed. Ride towards a stair set that has a handrail going down the middle. Bend your knees as the lead tire of your BMX reaches the the top stair of the set. Pull your handlebar grips up while jumping toward the handrail.

Step 5

Place the horizontal metallic peg on the front and back wheel onto the top of the handrail to lock into a street trick known as a "grind." Lean forward as the pegs of the bike grind down the handrail. Lift up on your handlebars as you reach the end of the handrail. Bend you legs and elbows as your BMX tires descend onto the pavement.
