The Internet has made a lot of paperwork processes much easier, but it's a mixed bag when it comes to marriage applications. Though some states and counties put their forms online, others don't, and applications still need to be filed in person along with other required paperwork. However, it is possible to obtain a marriage license application online for some states and counties, saving you at least one trip to the courthouse.
Step 1
Find the government website for the county in which the wedding is taking place (see Resources). In the U.S., marriage licenses are issued by the county and are processed at the county courthouse.
Step 2
Search the county website for the marriage license application form. Not all counties have marriage license applications online.
Step 3
Download and fill out the form. You may be able to type the information right into the file, but some forms must be printed and filled out by hand.
Step 4
Bring the completed form and other required identification or paperwork to the county office indicated on the website. Both partners are usually required to show up and sign the application in person. Make sure you've filed the application far enough in advance of your wedding to satisfy the waiting period requirement in your state.
