Thinning Hair Treatments for Women

Hair loss, known predominately as a man's condition, can affect women as well. The hair loss they suffer is more in a diffuse pattern, meaning that it thins out over the entire scalp. Genetics, stress, hormonal imbalances, drugs and chemotherapy are all things that can spark hair loss in women. Treatments for thinning hair can be used to maintain what is there, fill in what is missing or promote new growth.

Step 1

Get a hair weave. Hair weaves and hair extensions are made from synthetic or human hair. They get woven into your existing hair and cover up bald spots and give your hair a thicker appearance.

Step 2

Use minoxidil. Minoxidil is an FDA-approved substance that comes in a topical foam or liquid solution. You can buy it under the common name Rogaine, and you an buy it at drugstores. Apply the solution to the thin areas twice a day and to promote circulation to the scalp. After three months, existing hair may stop falling out and lost hair may start to regrow.

Step 3

Get hair transplantation. Hair transplants are done in a professional hair-loss facility by trained doctors. They uproot existing hair and implant it into areas where hair is missing. Although this treatment is generally used for men, women can also have this treatment.

Step 4

Get laser therapy. Laser hair rejuvenation is a new technology where you get a low energy laser beam shot down on to your scalp. This treatment helps improve the appearance of damaged and thin hair.

Step 5

Make changes in your daily eating and lifestyle habits. Follow a clean diet that is protein and iron-rich, perform stress-reducing activities like yoga and tai chi, and massage your scalp every night to stimulate circulation.
