Colon Cleansing Methods

The colon is an important part of the human anatomy. It is the location where water, mineral salts and nutrients get absorbed from food. After that takes place, the remnants are cleared from the body in the form of feces. Over the course of time, the colon has a tendency to get impacted with fecal matter, mucoid plaque and undigested food. This can cause malabsorption of key nutrients which can lead to poor health. Colon cleansing methods can be used to clear the colon of debris and restore its function.

Step 1

Eat more fiber. Fiber is a substance that helps push matter out of the colon. It can be found in foods like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and beans. The Mayo Clinic recommends that women get 21 to 25 g a day and men get 30 to 38 g day. Follow these guidelines to cleanse your colon.

Step 2

Give yourself an enema. Enemas are done with a small tube that gets inserted into the anus. Water is squeezed through this tube into your rectum which causes the colon to evacuate backed up waste.

Step 3

Use herbal formulas. Herbal formulas are made from natural substances. They have a laxative effect, kill parasites and help keep the colon operating properly once it is cleared. Examples of these are psyllium husks, aloe vera, wormwood powder, clove bud powder and senna leaf.

Step 4

Get a high-powered enema done professionally. Colon hydrotherapy, also known as "colonic irrigation," is a procedure that is done by a licensed professional. They insert a tool called a "speculum" into your rectum. Warm mineral-enriched water then gets pumped in to break up fecal matter. The water pressure is then reversed and the waste gets backed out of another hose attachment. As this treatment is going on, the colon hydrotherapist massages your stomach in certain areas to promote evacuation.
