Treatment for Psoriasis on the Face

Psoriasis is a skin condition in which patches of skin become thick, red and scaly. It occurs when the immune system of the body attacks and destroys skin cells. It typically affects the knees and elbows but can also affect the face.

Identification

Psoriasis can affect several parts of the face, including the ears, eyes, and areas around the mouth and nose. However, the National Psoriasis Foundation explains that facial psoriasis typically affects the hairline, the skin between the upper lip and the nose, the eyebrows, and the upper forehead.

Treatment

Special steroid creams made for use around the eyes are used to treat psoriasis around the eyes. Prescription steroid ear solutions are used to treat psoriasis in the ears. Treatment of psoriasis in the mouth and nose is administered with steroid medications created specifically for areas that are moist. The National Psoriasis Foundation notes that other treatments include calcipotriene ointment, tazarotene cream and gel, keratolytic products that remove scales and ultraviolet light.

Precautions

The skin on the face is delicate, therefore psoriasis treatment in this area is done carefully. The National Psoriasis Foundation warns that facial psoriasis medication should be applied carefully and with restraint. Steroid medication for psoriasis on the face can make facial skin thinner and shiny. Also, topical drugs for psoriasis on the face can irritate the eyes.
