How Many Calories Can Be Burned on a Gazelle?

Gazelle is the brand name for a series of exercise machines that generally simulate the movement of cross-country skiing. They can provide aerobic exercise without the stress to your joints that running can cause. You can calculate your calorie expenditure during a Gazelle session from a variety of factors, including your VO2 max and heart rate.

VO2 Max

VO2 max is essentially your maximum oxygen consumption rate, and is a good general indicator of your aerobic condition. You can estimate your VO2 max by running as far as you can in 12 minutes. The following formula provides this calculation where D is your 12-minute running distance in yards: VO2 max = [(D - 505) / 49.2].

Heart Rate

Heart rate provides an accurate estimate of your calorie expenditure rate over a relatively broad range. Your calorie expenditure rate during a Gazelle session is most accurate for the heart rate range of 90 to 150 beats per minute, or bpm. It's therefore important to select a pace on your Gazelle machine that keeps your heart rate within this target range.

Procedure

Place the transmitter for your heart monitor around your chest and wear the receiver unit on your wrist. Begin your Gazelle training session and turn your heart rate recorder on when your heart rate reaches 90 bpm. Slow down or speed up as necessary to keep your heart rate within the target range of 90 to 150 bpm. Turn your heart rate recorder on after you complete your Gazelle training session.

Calculations

"The Journal of Sports Sciences" has a calorie expenditure formula for each gender. These formulas require your VO2 max, average heart rate during the training session and the duration of that session in minutes. They also need your weight in pounds and your age in years. The calories expenditure formula for men is Calories Burned = [(0.404 x VO2 max) + (0.634 x Heart Rate) + (0.179 x Weight) + (0.271 x Age) - 95.7735] x Time / 4.184. The calorie expenditure formula for women is Calories Burned = [(0.380 x VO2 max) + (0.450 x Heart Rate) + (0.0468 x Weight) + (0.274 x Age) - 59.3954] x Time / 4.184.

Estimate

BuddySlim provides a general estimate for the calorie expenditure during a Gazelle training session. A person weighing 154 lb. can expect to burn about 341 calories per hour while using a Gazelle.
