The easiest way to adopt a child is to deal with a national public agency that works with children up for adoption. Public adoption agencies may take longer because very often they work alongside the biological parents of the child and you will need to be approved not only by the agency but also by the biological parents to adopt a child. With a public agency, biological parents have given up any legal rights concerning the child in question, according to the Cornell University Law School. Also adopting a child nationally will eliminate the requisites of delaying with foreign laws regarding adoption.

Step 1

Attend any adoption seminars held by adoption organizations, such as the International Child Foundation and World Child. In these seminars you will learn the basics of adoption and will be likely to meet representative of the different adoption agencies in your area as well as attorneys that have worked with them in the past. They will also help you understand the timelines and regulations surrounding adoption and help you make decisions that can speed up your adoption process.

Step 2

Hire an attorney familiar with the adoption laws specific to the state where you will be adopting. She will be able to help you with all the legal aspects and documents you will be dealing with during your adoptions process and will put you in contact with legitimate agencies.

Step 3

Think of what you are looking for in a child before you contact your adoption agency. Things you may want to consider are the gender, race and age of the child you will adopt. This will make it easier for the adoption agency to seek the files of children that match your criteria. If there are aspects you are not sure about what to choose, you can discuss your options with your adoption agent.

Step 4

Have all your bank statements and other information readily available in case the adoptions agency needs to verify information provided for in your application. Submit all your paperwork through your lawyer to make sure you have correctly filled out every form required for your adoption to go through as seamlessly as possible.

Tips and Warnings

  • Be as organized as possible with all your research and paperwork during the entire adoption process.
  • Avoid dealing directly with the biological parents without an attorney or you may spend more time in the process due to the inexperience of both parties.
