Wrinkles occur as people age because of skin damage, loss of volume and progressive changes to the skin due to muscle movement, according to Philip Young, a Seattle-based facial plastic surgeon. While prevention is always the best method, over time, the formation of deep facial wrinkles becomes unavoidable. There are, however, many treatment options for deep facial wrinkles, ranging from easy, do-it-yourself topical treatments to invasive medical procedures.

Step 1

Use a retinol or tretinoin-based antiwrinkle cream everyday. According to the University of Maryland, these are two of the most effect antiwrinkle skincare treatments and can firm the skin and reduce wrinkles. Tretinoin is a prescription medication, while retinol is available over-the counter.

Step 2

Scrub your skin twice a day with a skin wash or exfoliant. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests that doing so will help resurface your skin, reducing the depth of wrinkles by eliminating damaged cells.

Step 3

Apply sunscreen before going outdoors year round. In addition to preventing skin damage, this can also help repair damaged skin. The American Cancer Society recommends a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15.

Step 4

Get a dermabrasion or microdermabrasion treatment, suggests the American Academy of Dermatology. These noninvasive procedures use abrasive instruments to sand the skin, removing the outer layers and resulting in a long-lasting rejuvenated appearance.

Step 5

Get a chemical peel. Chemical peels apply a chemical solution to the outer layer of the skin to stimulate new skin growth. The American Academy of Dermatology says that the new skin tends to be smoother and more even in color.
