A sore throat can be either a viral or bacterial infection. Most commonly, it is caused by a viral infection, such as the flu or a cold. Some people have allergies that can create sinus drainage, causing a sore throat. No matter how a sore throat is developed, it can be painful, but you can get relief by using herbal medicine for a sore throat.
Marshmallow Root
Marshmallow root extract has a high mucilage count, making it a good choice to use for sore throats. This root helps the body remove excess fluids, which can sooth mucous membranes due to hacking, dry coughs or chest colds. These properties make it popular as a source of relief from sore throat for some people.
Ginger
Ginger can be an effective herbal remedy for sore throat because of its anti-inflammatory properties. Peel the skin, slice and boil it like tea. You can sweeten the brewed ginger with honey, which also helps relieve the cough that can accompany a sore throat.
Cayenne Pepper
Add 1/2 tsp. of cayenne pepper and 1/2 tsp. of salt to 1 cup of boiling water; stir well and gargle for one minute while the mixture is very warm. This brings more circulation to the area and is thought to help draw away the infection. The cayenne pepper numbs the nerves and can soothe the pain as the salt and warm water cleanses the throat and rinses away any bacteria and toxins.
Eucalyptus Herbal Steam
Combine 1 qt. water and 3 to 5 drops of eucalyptus oil in a pot and heat until it comes to a boil. Gently place your face over the steam with a towel over your head, creating a mini sauna. Breathing the steam in for several minutes to help relieve sore throat and congestion. Rubbing eucalyptus oil on a cotton ball and inhaling can make the throat feel cool, offering temporary relief.
Hyssop
Hyssop contains marrubiin, the compound that makes horehound, which is an excellent expectorant and sore-throat reliever. Steep 2 tsp. of dried hyssop in 1 cup of boiling water, cover for 10 minutes strain and drink, and you may get temporary relief from cough, congestion, as well as the sore throat.
Slippery Elm
Slippery elm bark can be taken in either lozenge form or as a tea. Slippery elm contains mucilage, a substance that becomes a slick gel when mixed with water. It coats and soothes the mouth and throat.
Warning
A sore throat lasting for more than two weeks can be a sign of a serious illness. If you do not see some improvement within several days of using herbal remedies, see your doctor, as this could be a symptom of a serious condition that may require medical treatment.
