Facial redness is caused by rosacea, which is a disease that infects your blood vessels. Your blood vessels get infected and flare up in size, which makes your skin turn red. You get facial redness when you have poor circulation, bacteria or have skin mites. While facial redness cannot be totally removed, you can stop it from becoming worse or reduce the color of the redness by taking medication, avoid touching your face and staying away from the sun.
Step 1
Try intense pulsed light treatment. Intense pulsed light treatment, or IPL, is a treatment for facial redness that uses a laser beam with different wavelengths of light. Dr. Neumann Haaf-von Below of the Department of Laser Therapy in the Netherlands studied 37 people that had facial redness. He treated them with IPL seven to eight times and found that 83 percent of those people saw improvement in their facial redness. Be aware, you may require that many treatments to see results.
Step 2
Keep your hands away from your face. When you itch or touch your face with your hands, you are taking the bacteria from your fingers and putting it on your face. This will only make your facial redness worse. To get rid of the germs and bacteria that may be on your skin, use a mild face soap to gently wash your face at least twice a day.
Step 3
Avoid the sun. Sunlight makes your facial redness worse swell up and become even more red. The UV rays of light burn your skin, which is already infected and red. If you have to be outside and exposed to the sun, wear protective gear like a hat and sunglasses. Also, wear a chemical free, natural sunscreen on your face.
Step 4
Go to your doctor for a prescription for antibiotics. Antibiotics and used to treat facial redness not for their ability to kill bacteria, which is normally the case with antibiotics. Instead, antibiotics are used for their anti-inflammatory agents when you have facial redness. The American Academy of Dermatologists recommends antibiotics to treat facial redness and acne. Your doctor will give you a medication that treats your papules and pustules.
Step 5
Visit your dermatologist for face cream. If antibiotics don't do the trick for your facial redness, facial cream can help reduce the red color and the infection and inflammation. The most commonly prescribed medications are tretinoin and benzoyl peroxide.
