Landing an interview is the first step in getting a new job. And while it's certainly a big step, doing well in that interview is essential to actually getting that job. It is important to look, dress and act in the right way to nail the interview and get the job.

Preparation

Before heading into any interview, research the company for which you want to work. Visit the company's website or talk to anyone you know who works there. Know what job you are applying for, and be ready to answer questions about how your skills and experience can help that company. Also be ready to ask questions during the interview. However, do not ask questions that can easily be answered by reading the company's website. This will show a potential employer that you have not taken the time to do any research. Do not ask questions about salary and benefits unless you have already been offered a job.

Interview

Arrive early for the interview. You do not want to be late, or appear rushed. Greet your interviewer with a handshake. Sit up straight and make good eye contact. Be sure to use proper English, no profanities or slang. Keep the conversation positive--do not make negative comments about any previous jobs or employers. Also, do not complain about any job-related tasks or responsibilities you were given in a previous position. Employers will be looking for a positive, enthusiastic person.

Appearance

Your appearance matters. Be sure to shower, use deodorant and trim your nails before the interview. Your hair should be combed and neat. All clothes should be conservative and wrinkle-free, and avoid flashy jewelry. Wear conservative, closed-toe shoes. Wear little or no perfume or cologne, and women should keep their makeup conservative. If you carry a purse or briefcase, keep it small and simple. Inspect your clothes for tags or dangling threads.
