Having an even skin tone is desired by many people. Marks on your face can be embarrassing, and according to a 2006 Proctor and Gamble beauty survey, can increase a woman's perceived age by as much as 20 years. Dark spots on your face can be due to freckles, uneven skin tone or post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation. If you have had any bug bites or acne, there may be scars left behind. These dark spots on your face will usually fade away over time. There are treatments that you can do at home to lighten dark spots that will result in a more clear complexion, with an increased confidence level.

Step 1

Test a small area of your skin for sensitivity to the bleaching cream. Apply the cream to a patch of your face with dark spots. Observe the treated area over the next 24 hours. Note if there is any redness or irritation. If there is, do not continue treatment.

Step 2

Cleanse your skin. Apply a mild cleanser to damp skin with your finger tips in small circular motions. Do not use a wash cloth or other type of cleansing sponge to avoid irritation. Rinse face with lukewarm water and pat dry. Allow the face to completely dry for 3 to 5 minutes.

Step 3

Apply a thin layer of bleaching cream to the affected area twice a day. Using the tips of your fingers, rub the cream into the hyper-pigmented areas completely. Try to avoid getting the bleaching cream onto your normally pigmented skin to keep from over-lightening those areas.

Step 4

Wash your hands. This will ensure that you don't spread the bleaching cream to other areas, such as your eyes, or even ingesting it.

Tips and Warnings

  • Protect your skin from the sun to prevent any dark spots that you now have from getting any darker. This can be done by applying a sunscreen 20 minutes before going outdoors. People with dark skin tones should also wear a sunscreen. Wait 5 minutes after applying your bleaching cream to apply any other non-medicated products such as sunscreens, make-up or moisturizers.
  • Consult with your dermatologists before using any treatments to lighten dark spots on your face. Do not use other medicated products on the same areas unless instructed by a doctor. Do not apply near your mouth or eyes.
