Acne is the most common skin problem in the United States, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The four key components to acne are excess oil production, clogged follicles, bacteria and inflammation. Treatment for acne often deals with reducing oil that accumulates on the skin surface. Another approach might be to provide antibiotics, such as Biaxin, to prevent the infection that accompanies chronic breakouts. Biaxin is a macrolide antibiotic the helps fight bacteria. Taking antibiotics as a preventative measure would be only be necessary in severe cases or for those with additional complications, such as a compromised immune system.

Step 1

Wash the affected area twice a day. Avoid scrubbing skin. Instead apply a cleaner with your fingers and wash it off with warm water. Pat skin dry with a clean towel and apply any topical treatments recommended by your doctor to prevent acne.

Step 2

Read the prescription instructions for dosage information. Your doctor will provide proper dosage based on the severity of your acne. Follow the instructions and take the correct amount of the drug every day. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can or skip it until next scheduled dose.

Step 3

Take pills with a full glass of water. According to Drugs.com, it is not necessary to take the pill with food. Do not break up the pill, but take it whole. Many forms of Biaxin work on a time-release system. Breaking up the pill will interfere with that process.

Step 4

Store the pills in a dry area between dosages. Do not store oral suspensions in the refrigerator.

Tips and Warnings

  • Keep taking the medication for the number of days recommended. To prevent acne, the Biaxin needs to kill all the bacteria complicating your breakouts. Even if your skin seems clear, do not discontinue the antibiotic unless instructed by your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to clarithromycin. Inform your doctor before beginning treatment of any other drugs you take regularly, including dietary supplements. If you feel short of breath or have chest pain after taking this antibiotic, discontinue and see a doctor.
