Heartburn is a terribly uncomfortable feeling, arising when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. According to the Mayo Clinic, the problem occurs because the esophageal sphincter, which allows food and drink into your stomach, fails to close properly. Heartburn often happens at night, after a meal or any other time when running out the the store for medicine is not convenient. There are a few tips you can try at home for heartburn relief.
Gum
Experts at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center say that chewing gum is one of the best and fastest working, home remedies for heartburn. When you chew gum, you produce saliva, which is alkaline. As you swallow, the saliva clears acid from the throat and esophagus, and it neutralizes other acid it comes in contact with.
Baking Soda
Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, has been used for years as a home remedy for heartburn. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, baking soda neutralizes the acid in the stomach. Start with 1/2 tsp. of baking soda mixed with 8 oz of water. Be sure the baking soda is thoroughly dissolved. If you are on medication for hypertension or have been prescribed a low-salt diet, speak with your physician before trying baking soda for heartburn.
Change Position
The Mayo Clinic reports that heartburn is often worse when you are bent over or laying down. Heartburn is often relieved simply by changing position. If you awaken with heartburn, find a way to elevate yourself. Sleep in a reclining chair, or prop yourself up with pillows. If you experience heartburn often, the Mayo Clinic recommends elevating the head of your bed with blocks or bed risers. An elevated height of 6 to 9 inches should bring relief. Many pharmacies also sell wedges, which are foam wedge pillows that can be propped between the box spring and mattress.
