San Francisco's reputation as a health-conscious city makes it a fun place to stay active without going over-budget. "Men's Health" magazine lists San Francisco as one of the country's fittest cities. Steep hills leading to ocean views and green parks may tempt you to exercise outdoors, while local produce markets will keep your body fueled for the day. Whatever your budget, San Francisco is bound to have a unique activity to keep you fit and entertained.

Stair Climbing

As a hilly city, San Francisco is an outdoor stairmaster for people who want a unique workout. "Frommer's San Francisco" guide recommends Lyon Street Steps to start. Take the 288 steps at Green Street and leave through the iron gate for a jog around the Presidio. Alternatively, when you get to the top, walk to Baker Street and take 369 steps back down to Green Street. For a bigger challenge, take Filbert Street Steps, which take you 377 grueling steps up Telegraph Hill. At the top, enjoy panoramic views of San Francisco and the bay, and revel in the fact that you didn't spend a penny to get there.

Farmers' Markets

If California farmland piques your interest about local produce, visit one of San Francisco's farmers' market. Even if you can't afford much, browsing the aisles is a relaxing way to spend time outdoors--and you never know when someone will offer you a free sample. San Francisco has small farmers' markets in nearly every major neighborhood, in addition to several large markets such as the Ferry Plaza Farmers' Market, featured in the Atlantic.

Rock Climbing

When San Francisco gets too foggy or windy for outdoor sports, head to an indoor rock climbing center for a unique fitness challenge. Rock climbing works every part of your body at the same time, according to the "Dallas News." The San Francisco Chronicle's "Bay List" voters ranked Touchstone Climbing as the number one rock climbing center in the region. Its San Francisco location has walls over 50 feet tall, with easy slopes for beginners and steep walls for advanced rock climbers. Prices are roughly equal to a day pass at a fitness center.

Fruit Picking

In the summer months, San Francisco's farms come alive with u-pick events, when anyone can stop by and pick their own fruit. Although you'll have to drive outside the city to find the farmland, hand-choosing fruit is a rewarding experience. Kids can join in and get their hands dirty while learning about healthy eating habits. At the end of the day, take your fruit home and bake some healthy pies. Costs are comparable to store prices.

Parks

For all-day fun that won't cost you anything, visit one of San Francisco's many parks. They provide an excellent way to escape the city streets and enjoy nature for a while, from towering trees to colorful flowers. Go for a jog or take your bicycle for a ride. A walk through Golden Gate Park will provide many unique sightings, including a large windmill and Spreckels Lake.
