Yoga is a practice derived from ancient times that is meant to bring the mind, body and spirit together. It normally consists of meditation, controlled breathing and specific poses. Sometimes chanting is also used. The benefits of yoga include better flexibility, pain reduction, relaxation, self-awareness, increased energy and more restful sleep. There are several different types of yoga geared towards different skill and fitness levels.
Iyengar Yoga
Iyengar is a type of yoga where the different yoga positions are taught and practiced with props to help beginners hold their bodies correctly. It's an excellent way for beginners to learn the common forms, and to decide if yoga is for them. The forms are held for a longer time period, as the emphasis is on the forms themselves, and not on the transitions to other forms.
Hatha Yoga
Hatha yoga is one of the most popular styles of yoga. Many of the traditional yoga poses are developed from the Hatha style. It tends to be relaxing, and is appropriate for all levels, from beginner to advanced.
Vikram Yoga
Vikram, or Bikram, yoga is performed in a room that is heated to approximately 95 degrees F, to replicate the climate of India, where this art form was developed. During a Vikram yoga session, participants go through 26 poses in order. The heat is supposed to enhance flexibility and prevent injury.
Ashtanga Yoga
Ashtanga is a more strenuous type of yoga. The forms can be more difficult than those in other types of yoga, and are good for athletes to gain strength. While Ashtanga can be practiced by people new to yoga, the moves can be quite strenuous, so should only be attempted by those in good physical condition, who exercise regularly.
Kundalini Yoga
Kundalini yoga employs chanting, deep breathing and meditation to enhance the self-awareness and energy brought on by the yoga poses themselves. The noises and chants are used to stimulate different parts of the brain and to release energy from the spine.
