The expense makes a day at a spa out of reach for many people, but it's still possible to enjoy that pampered spa feeling. Take some time out of your busy schedule to treat yourself to a facial every one to two weeks and you'll feel like a brand new person. On the day you do your facial, set aside at least 30 minutes when you won't be disturbed. Light some fragrant candles, turn on some relaxing music and remember that this time is all about you.
Steam
Step 1
Use a steam treatment to prepare your face for a deep cleansing. Simmer 4 to 5 cups of water in a large saucepan. Add two to three drops of essential oil, or a handful of dried or fresh rose petals or other herbs, if desired.
Step 2
Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the water to cool slightly. Lean over the steaming water with a towel draped tent-like over your head.
Step 3
Allow the steam to penetrate your pores for no more than five minutes. Pat your face dry, then wash your face with a gentle cleanser.
Tone
Step 1
Tone your cleansed skin with a gentle toner formulated for your skin type. Toner will clean out clogged pores, remove any remaining cleanser, and will leave your face feeling refreshed. Select a toner formulated for your skin type, or use witch hazel.
Step 2
Dip a cotton ball or cosmetic pad in the toner. Smooth the toner gently over your face, giving special attention to areas with acne, blackheads or whiteheads.
Step 3
Continue toning your skin until the cotton ball or cleansing pad shows no traces of dirt, oil, cleanser or makeup. Allow your skin to air dry.
Mask
Step 1
Select a facial mask according to your skin type. Use a purifying mask or a clay-based mask if you have oily skin or acne. Apply a moisturizing mask if your skin is dry, especially during the winter.
Step 2
Smooth the mask onto your skin. Lay back, relax, and leave the facial mask on your skin for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Put cucumber slices or cold, brewed tea bags over your closed eyes to sooth tired eyes and relieve puffiness.
Step 3
Wash the mask from your face with warm water and a washcloth. Pat your face dry with a towel. Reapply toner, then apply a moisturizer for your skin type. If you have oily skin or acne, use an oil-free moisturizer.
Tips and Warnings
- Include an exfoliating scrub in your facial routine if you have enlarged, clogged pores or dry, flaky skin. Apply the scrub in a circular motion, avoiding the area around your eyes. Rinse with warm water.
