Good bacteria in the digestive system and vagina called lactobacilli help with the digestive process and with protection against infection respectively, but they can be killed by antibiotics and may need to be replaced. That is where acidophilus supplements come in. Available as a pill or suppository as well as in yogurt and other dairy products, acidophilus supplement is a probiotic, which is an organism that can be used medicinally.
Benefits
Taking an acidophilus supplement insures an adequate supply of vitamin K, lactase and anti-microbial substances. Infections like bacterial vaginosis (vaginal infections) are combated with lactobacillus acidophilus. It also aids with pylori infection, intestinal blockages, gut barrier function and for prevention of premature birth according to early studies reported by the Mayo Clinic.
Dosage
Take capsules of lactobacillus acidophilus of 1.5 grams for the correct dosage. If any more than that is taken, there is the possibility of mild abdominal pain while lesser amounts don't make enough good bacteria to be useful. Vaginal infections were also cleared using a similar dose.
Side Effects and Safety
Few side effects or safety issues are present with acidophilus supplements. Some abdominal pain or gas formation has been reported. Those with weakened immune systems or recent intestinal surgery or damage should avoid the supplements. Organ or heart surgery could also expose the patient to infections of the blood if used prematurely.
