Chest protectors are used in many sports where there is a danger of impact with the chest. They can be a vital piece of equipment in sports, such as fencing and martial arts, preventing injury to the breasts, ribs and sternum. It is important to choose a chest protector that fits accurately, otherwise an ill-fitting protector can contribute to injury and may hamper your movements.

Step 1

Find the sizing chart for your particular chest protector. Different sports have different requirements of their protectors. Search online or visit a retailer selling the protector you will be using and determine which measurements are needed. Some protectors are assigned according to height; others rely on chest measurement.

Step 2

Measure your chest using a flexible tape measure or a piece of string. Wrap the tape or string beneath your armpits and across your breasts if you are female. If you are using string, measure the string with the tape measure to get your measurement.

Step 3

Measure your height by standing with your back to a wall or door frame and using a pencil to make a mark just above your head. Measure from the floor to the mark with a measuring tape.

Step 4

Take note of your bra cup size if you are a female sizing for a molded chest protector. Find the tag inside your bra that indicates the cup size.

Things You'll Need

  • Flexible measuring tape or regular measuring tape
  • String (if using regular measuring tape)
  • Pencil
