Kids Activities in Montgomery County

Montgomery County, Maryland, devotes an entire section of its Parks and Recreation Department to promoting healthy choices for its residents. In such a health-conscious area, it is no surprise that there are a variety of activities, such as swimming, hiking and sports leagues, available to children.

Aquatics

There are four public indoor swimming pools and seven public outdoor swimming pools in Montgomery County. The outdoor pools are open from Labor Day through Memorial Day.The indoor pools are open year-round. At both the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, children can participate in recreational swim time, swim lessons and swim teams.

Nature

Scattered across Montgomery County are four nature centers. These centers provide educational and recreational opportunities to nurture a child's curiosity about the environment. At the Black Hill Nature Center, children can discover native plants and animals live along the Discovery Walk. At Locust Grove Nature Center, kids can explore the open meadows, which are home to butterflies, bluebirds, beetles and bats. The Meadowside Nature Center features the Curiosity Corner Discovery Room, which allows for children to participate in hands-on activities such as games, puzzles and touching live animals.

Sports Leagues and Clinics

In Montgomery County, you can sign your children up for a variety of sports leagues and clinics. Sports leagues include street hockey, softball, soccer, kickball and flag football. Most leagues run for six weeks. Sports clinics are offered to children ages 3 to 17. Children can participate in either basketball or soccer clinics. While at these clinics, children are separated into groups based on age and ability.

Toddlers

If you have a toddler who is a bundle of energy, consider signing him up for the Tiny Tots program. This program is designed for preschool age children. While parental participation is required in the Tiny Tots classes, the classes are designed around the children's enjoyment. These classes include dancing, arts and crafts, sports and music.

Exercise and Fitness

Montgomery County offers a variety of excise and fitness classes specifically for children. These sports are designed to teach children how to follow a healthy and active lifestyle while encouraging them to have a lifelong involvement in sports. The youth exercise classes include weight training, cardiovascular and yoga. In the yoga classes, children learn yoga poses, breathing practices and self-calming techniques in a fun environment.
