Herbal Remedy for Acid Reflux Disease

Acid reflux disease is caused by stomach acids regurgitating up into the esophagus. A common symptom of the disorder is chronic heartburn, the burning sensation in the chest and throat. The esophageal sphincter, the opening and closing band that allows food and liquids into the stomach, may become weak and not close properly. This allows stomach acid to flow up the esophageal tube. Pain is strongest when a person is lying down or bending over. A variety of herbal remedies use ingredients found in everyday kitchens to cure acid reflux's symptoms of heartburn.

Ginger Root

The ginger root is a natural absorber of acid that decreases heartburn. Take one to two capsules of ginger root after a meal.

Fennel Seeds

Anethole is the main compound present in the fennel seed that causes relaxation of the muscles in the digestive system. Take 1/2 tsp. fennel seeds after meal times. The seeds naturally decrease stomach and intestinal tract spasms.

Herbal Tea

Drink tea to relieve heartburn symptoms. Mix equal amounts of dried lavender and aniseed. Place it into 1 cup boiling water. Allow it to steep for 5 to 10 minutes. Remove the herbs. Add 1 tbsp. honey to sweeten the brew, if desired.

Bitter Herbs

Goldenseal, gentian root and wormwood are herbs that fall into the bitter category. Bitters are commonly used to aid with digestive and stomach disorders. Take a capsule of one of the mentioned herbs before meal times.

Basil Chew

Basil leaves naturally fight heartburn. Chop up a few fresh basil leaves and place them into the corner of your mouth, similar to chewing tobacco.
