ProAir albuterol sulfate is a bronchodilator that helps to relax the muscles surrounding the airways to increase the flow of air to the lungs, according to Drugs.com. This medication helps to treat and prevent bronchospasm in individuals suffering from chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, like emphysema. Asthma occurs when the bronchial passageways constrict upon exposure to environmental irritants, allergens or exercise, according to MedlinePlus. Proair albuterol sulfate is a fast-acting medication that quickly opens up passage ways to relieve chest tightness and improve breathing. It is available in both metered dose inhaler and nebulizer form.

Metered Dose Inhaler

Step 1

Shake the canister in an up and down, or side to side motion prior to use. The albuterol compound is suspended in a mixture of sodium choloride and sulfuric acid. Shaking the liquid helps distribute the medication for proper administration.

Step 2

Remove the cap from the mouthpiece of the inhaler. Fully exhale to prepare the lungs for the medication.

Step 3

Place the mouth of the inhaler between the lips. Close the lips tightly around the mouthpiece and slowly breathe in while pushing down on the canister to expel the solution.

Step 4

Hold the breath for approximately 10 seconds and then release the breath out slowly.

Step 5

Rinse the mouth out with tepid water to remove any lingering medication. In some cases, Proair users may experience thrush--a yeast infection of the mouth. Washing the mouth out helps in preventing the proliferation of fungus.

Step 6

Clean the inhaler each week by removing the canister and then placing it under warm water. Allow the mouthpiece to dry before putting the item back together or using.

Nebulizer

Step 1

Measure the amount of Proair required set forth by a physician. Generally, Proair albuterol sulfate comes in pre-measured plastic containers called ampules. They are available in either 0.75 mg or 1.75 mg strength.

Step 2

Separate the tubing of the nebulizer to open to the chamber. The chamber is the large tubular section, which connects to the smaller tubes leading to the compressor. Twist the mouthpiece cap off to reveal this area, which will have a T-shaped plastic device that helps distribute the medication. The compressor pushes air through the machine and up the tubes to create a fine mist of oxygen and albuterol sulfate.

Step 3

Attach the mouthpiece back to the chamber by screwing it on clockwise. Turn on the nebulizer and wait for the mist to begin.

Step 4

Sit upright and put the mouthpiece in the mouth. Breathe slowly for the duration of the mist, which last approximately five to 15 minutes, depending on the dosage. Treatment is complete when the chamber is empty.

Step 5

Clean the nebulizer chamber, mouthpiece and tubing after each use. Place the chamber, mouthpiece and tubing in a bowl of water in the microwave for two minutes. This sanitizes the items to prevent bacterial growth and preps it for future use.

Tips and Warnings

  • People should always shake the inhaler prior to use. Children usually use a facemask with the nebulizer to ensure they inhale the complete course of Proair.
  • Misusing a Proair inhaler or nebulizer ampule can cause the medication to become ineffective, worsen asthma symptoms and conceal underlying issues, according to Drugs.com. If asthmatics find they use the fast-acting inhaler more often, they may need preventative inhalation treatment such as corticosteroids.
